Brain Edema

Abstract
A generally acceptable definition of brain edema is a state of increased brain bulk due to .an excessive proportion of water, electrolytes, and proteins. The excessive fluid is loaded intracellularily in gray matter and extracellularily in white matter.
Klazo had classified brain edema into vasogenic type and cytotoxic one. We frequently meet the former which is probably due to increased vascular permeability.
Brain edema from whatever causes finally induce to increase intracranial pressure and changes of vegetative functions such as vital signs, headache, vomiting and papilledema are clinically manifested.
Four principles govern the treatment of brain edema. Parenteral use of Mannitol and Dexamethasone is a favorite for a neurosurgeon.
